Gateway to the 10,000 Islands Everglades City, called Gateway to the 10,000 Islands, is a charming mix of old and new and a reminder of an earlier age. This fishing village and mecca for sports fishermen is only half an hour from Naples and Marco Island and less than 1½ hours from Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Fort Myers. Lifestyle Fishing, kayaking, bicycling and exploring the 10,000 Islands with local tour guides are among the many activities available. Everglades City is a perfect base for visiting the Big Cypress National Preserve, Everglades National Park, and Fakahatchee Strand State Preserve. History Prior to 1923, farming was the primary occupation of people living in the area and included sugarcane, bananas, and vegetables. George T. Storter is considered the true founder of the town and the first to draw visitors and sportsmen to the area. The Storter family home became the Rod & Gun Club in 1925, a gathering place for hunting and fishing enthusiasts - many of them famous, including Ernest Hemingway and Dwight D. Eisenhower.
